This policy explains what personal information Unplug Magazine collects, why, and your rights under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

1. Who we are

Unplug Magazine ("we", "us", "our") operates this website. For any privacy question or to exercise your rights below, contact our Information Officer at info@unplugnews.com.

2. Information we collect

Account details — your email address and a password (stored encrypted) when you register.
Things you submit — names, birthdays and photos, Directory profile details, job vacancies, Opportunity Passports, event details, shout-out nominations, gallery images and article content.
Contact & newsletter — the name, email and message you send us, or the email you use to subscribe.
Payments — the amount and reference for EFT payments. We do not receive or store your card or banking login details.
Automatically — anonymous usage analytics (page views, a random session ID) and your IP address, used only to keep the site secure and prevent spam.

3. How we use your information

To create and manage your account; to display content you have submitted and approved for publication; to process payments; to respond to you; to send you the newsletter if you subscribed; to keep the platform safe (spam/abuse prevention); and to understand, in aggregate, how the site is used.

4. Content that becomes public

Some submissions are published publicly once approved by an admin — for example Directory profiles, approved shout-outs, job listings and Opportunity Passports. Please only submit information you are comfortable making public. Opportunity Passports never display your contact details; your email is used for verification only.

5. Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers that help us run the platform (our hosting, database and email providers) and where required by law. Approved public content is, by its nature, visible to anyone.

6. How long we keep it

Account and published content is kept while your account is active. Job listings and Opportunity Passports are shown for 14 days. You can ask us to delete your data at any time (see your rights below).

7. Your rights under POPIA

You have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, to ask us to correct or delete it, to object to certain processing, and to withdraw consent (for example, to unsubscribe from the newsletter). To exercise any of these, email info@unplugnews.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa.

8. Cookies & local storage

We use your browser's local storage to remember your accessibility preferences and to keep you signed in. We use a first-party session identifier for anonymous analytics. We do not use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.

9. Children

The site is not intended for children under 18 without the consent of a parent or guardian.

10. Changes

We may update this policy from time to time; the "last updated" date above will change accordingly.

This policy is provided as a starting point and should be reviewed by a qualified professional and completed with your registered legal entity details before you rely on it commercially.

1. Using the site

You may browse freely. Some actions (submitting content, buying a listing) require a free account. You are responsible for keeping your account details secure and for activity under your account.

2. Content you submit

You keep ownership of what you submit, but you confirm you have the right to submit it and you grant Unplug Magazine permission to display and promote it on the platform. Don't submit anything unlawful, misleading, hateful, infringing, or that isn't yours to share.

3. Moderation

Public submissions are reviewed before they appear, and we may decline, edit for display, or remove any content at our discretion. Job listings and Opportunity Passports appear for 14 days.

4. Paid services

Directory packages, article publishing, event listings, edition downloads and competition entries are paid services, currently settled by manual EFT. Prices are shown before you pay and are confirmed on our side once payment reflects.

5. Deaf Community features

The jobs board and Opportunity Passports are a community platform — we are not an employer, recruitment agency, or party to any arrangement between users. We don't guarantee the accuracy of third-party listings and are not liable for interactions that result from them. Employers posting a vacancy confirm they are a deaf-friendly employer.

6. Intellectual property

The Unplug Magazine name, branding and site design belong to us. Content published by contributors remains theirs.

7. Third-party links

We link to partners and social platforms (for example Ivory Muse, our social channels and advertisers). We aren't responsible for the content or practices of those external sites.

8. Disclaimer & liability

The site is provided "as is". To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of the site or reliance on user-submitted content.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa.
